Couple’s Counseling

couple's counseling EFT

If you and your partner feel more like roommates than a couple, couple’s counseling can help. Common issues that couple’s counseling can help with might include infidelity, sex and intimacy issues, poor communication, or boundary issues. As your counselor, it is my job to give you and your partner a safe, objective space to explore complex issues. Most of the issues that come up in couple’s counseling have solutions. In addition, counseling teaches couples useful skills to support each other. To learn more about the model I use when working with couples, check out the section below about Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).

Using Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) for Couple’s Counseling

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is considered the gold standard in terms of framework and interventions used to work through relational and attachment issues. EFT can also be adapted for families (EFFT) and has shown successful outcomes with individuals (EFIT). In this model, we will give emotions and process priority and focus. This model is much more about helping us figure out where positive changes can be made in a strained relationship by interrupting the “negative interaction cycle” that can exist in any relationship, romantic or platonic.

In the beginning of treatment with this model, we will complete an attachment history with both partners to identify and understand attachment styles, past and current attachment injuries, and each partner’s “role” in their interaction cycle as a couple. We will track the cycle and spend a significant amount of time “slowing down” and processing each partner’s unique experience. We will practice communication skills as a daily goal each time we meet with EFT and attachment framework.
